Welcome to the amazing world of Natural Dyes! In this hands-on class we will dye wool samples from 6 different dye pots of locally grown and foraged dyestuffs, plus Indigo. Potential dyestuffs (Mother Nature dependent) will include some of the following: orange cosmos, dyer’s coreopsis, black hollyhocks, marigolds, madder root, black walnuts, goldenrod, onion skins.
We will also experiment with different methods of color-shifting using various modifiers, mordants and overdyeing.
Students will go home with a notebook, pre-printed instructions of everything we did, references, samples of all our dyed wools, and a ‘starter kit’ containing all the mordants and dyestuffs necessary to dye 4oz - 8oz of your own wool fiber at home.
Materials Notes: All class materials are provided.
There will not be a scheduled lunch break but feel free to bring snacks or a lunch.
Equipment Notes: Rubber gloves (not plastic food service gloves); dyeing can be messy so students should wear old clothes and/or an apron; old towels are always handy and helpful.

The purpose of this class is to provide participants with an introduction to weaving Danish Medallions on a rigid heddle loom. This weave structure typically uses thicker contrasting supplemental wefts to draw the ground weft up to create circular or medallion shapes in the fabric. Participants will create a sampler as they experiment with a variety of supplemental weft yarns to create different designs using this particular weaving technique.
Materials and Equipment Notes:
To maximize the weaving experience, the participants should bring the following to the class:
A rigid heddle loom, pre-warped as follows:
10, 12 or 12.5 -dent reed
Pre-warped with 8/4 carpet warp (or something similar) in any color. This will be the main or ground weft, so participants should bring an ample supply for use throughout the sampler.
Width at the reed can vary from 6” to 12” and should be in 1” increments (i.e., 6”, 7”, 8”, etc.)
The number of warp ends will vary depending on the reed DPI
One stick shuttle wrapped with the main/ground weft
One stick shuttle with supplemental weft in a contrasting color and slightly thicker than the main weft
1 or 2 additional stick shuttles for use with other supplemental wefts (to be provided by the instructor to encourage experimenting with the Danish Medallion weave structure).
